The IT Operations Systems Engineer will help lead the effort to build out our platform. Typical projects include working with architects to design and provision services, hardware and software configurations for high capacity data storage systems, scalable multi-tier web applications. Systems Engineers are heavily involved in developing the tools and processes that monitor and maintain our systems and should become a subject matter expert.
Responsibilities of the Systems Engineer:
As part of a cross-functional team, you?ll be participating in the design, implementation and maintenance of systems infrastructure heralding the effort in our new and innovative educational platforms for schools, districts, and states across the country.
Work with architects, software engineers and operations personnel to design and implement large-scale systems (mainly Linux) from front end to back end.
Help shape the product and/or platform roadmap, define scope, participate in estimation efforts, and prioritize initiatives
Contribute to continuous improvement of systems management processes from automated release and testing to operations monitoring, automatic provisioning, escalation, disaster recovery and security.
Work with security experts and software architects to implement appropriate information security protocols.
Develop and maintain operations run-books for systems.
Other specific responsibilities vary by project area and experience, but may include technical leadership of a software project team.
Requirements of the Systems Engineer:
BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent, followed by 5 or more years of professional software systems engineering or administration experience.
Proven technical leadership experience in a software engineering environment.
Strong CS fundamentals with an emphasis on operating systems.
Experience with application server deployment, configuration and operation. Linux/Java stack preferred.
Scripting experience is a must (perl, python or Unix shell)
Taste for simplicity and elegance in technical design and implementation as well as an appreciation for test driven development and building software the right way.
Experience with database deployment and operation: PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, SQL
Preferred Experience and Knowledge:
Certification in RedHat Linux (RHCE) or similar.
ITIL certification and strong familiarity with ITIL best practices.
Strong experience with SAN and Virtualization technologies.
Experience with public and private cloud computing.
Strong experience automating tasks.
Software Development experience.
