are you talking near real time networking specifically then? Or scientific/game/etc high performance code?

getting the job requires finding one, they are out there but are very minority vs more mainstream jobs. After you find it, you have to have the skills to land it. So the question really is how to get those skills, and its a mix of experience and focused study around the technology platforms you want to use ... eg high performance databases are very different from high performance graphics.
