R&D Programmer - Shading & Rendering - Double Negative

Double Negative’s R&D department develop ground-breaking software to ensure that the studio remains at the cutting-edge of global VFX production.

Our R&D Programmers support multiple film projects in parallel, from initial design through on-set supervision and production to post-production, by delivering pioneering tools that enable our artists to tackle increasingly complex challenges, with stunning results.

R&D Programmers at DNeg are tasked with a variety of responsibilities spanning the full software development life-cycle; designing, supporting and maintaining software, integrating tools into our Pipeline, and even further extension as work adapts and new challenges arise.

Double Negative is looking for a strong engineer with excellent mathematical skills to join the Shading and Rendering team within the R&D group.

Needs to Do:
• Liaise with Shader Writers and project supervisors to understand current and upcoming production challenges with respect to shading and rendering
• Investigate appropriate solutions and techniques to address challenges
• Present ideas to the Head of Lighting and Rendering
• Development planning: develop specification and design documents and break-down the design into tasks
• Communicate development timeframes to the Head of Lighting and Rendering
• Support end-users during production

Needs to Know:
• Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent subject
• High-level mathematical skills are essential
• Experience in writing a full path tracer with Integrators and BRDFs, or thorough experience in programming for path tracers such as Arnold and Mantra.
• Experience in writing modular software using libraries as appropriate, in particular using C++
• Able to deliver pipeline-ready workflows
• Understanding of other programming languages/techniques is desirable
• Knowledge of Maya, Katana or Houdini is desirable
• Familiarity with pipeline issues, look-dev and lighting is desirable
