correct me if im wrong, but wouldnt it be easier to use an interface like termios?

Ah, initially something simple would be ok, but ultimately I need it to be a graphic interface.

It isn't just reading and writing, there will also be some external hardware to interface with that will be interpreting electrical pulses into hex.
