C++ & Java - anything in common?

I'm just wondering, because the computing course I'm going to do at college teaches java and a couple of more languages, but not c++. So will any of my C++ knowledge facilitate me while learning java.
I'm asking this because I remember seeing java functions similar to c++ functions such as If else, switch case, while loops etc.
