Hal 9000

Hello, I was pondering what my next project should be and I thought about making a program like Hal 9000. The more I thought about it though, the more complicated it seemed to me. The program would require a huge bank of words and it would have to be able to recognize the combinations to between them. I am pretty much a beginner programmer so I don't know if this is really my skill level but I still want to know how one would do it. How would I get started on such a project?
