arrows keys for selecting(read for explanation)

Ive run into a bit of a .. deadly error here :D.

Actually my problem is i cant find any topics about making things selectable where you use your arrow keys to go up and down a list of choices and press enter to choose it.

kinda like how your computers startup setup is.

Is this possible with simple console programs? I wanted this feature to be able to work with my calculator where i could just present a list of operations and you could scroll up and down and press enter to select them. I wasnt sure if that is possible or if you need to do some kind of gui or windows programming.
