OpenGl Texture with SDL

I heard that SDL was more user-friendly than OpenGl for loading images so I was wondering if there was a way to use SDL to load an image and then have OpenGl convert it to a texture. Just so you know, I have SDL and OpenGl set up already and I know absolutely NO SDL but do know some OpenGl. Enough that I should be able to use a texture (I've seen tutorials on it and I'm pretty sure that I understand using the texture but loading an image with pure Gl looks crazy while I know that SDL has a LoadBMP function already). Thx in advance and try to keep responses simple (dumb them down)
