Editor for Sprite Sheets (png)

I'm learning SDL. I'm using paint to edit my (png) images. I wonder, does anyone recommend another editor for images? (download for free if possible...)

I recommend both Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Fireworks, depending on your image format. You can also go with a much lower end program called Jasc Paint Shop Pro. Unfortunately all of these products will cost you, however they typically have a 30-90 trial version. I'm not aware of any robust packages that are "legally" free :)

Thanks Return 0 and Grey Wolf, but I found a free program (paint.NET, something else as paint from windows) that seems pretty much what I want. GIMP seems very handy to, but it's made for editing images, and I want to create whole new pictures. Maybe, when I got good at all this, I'll buy some good programs :)
