Hi, I've been trying to learn C++ as just a hobby at the moment, but I was wondering what types of jobs are available if I finally get a competent understanding of the language?
Are there any jobs/careers where you might get hired for knowing C++/Windows CLR alone (Without knowing other languages like JAVA, HTML etc.) or would I absolutely have to know all languages before thinking about looking for a job?
Any suggestions on what companies might be hiring for programmers?
As far as I know, C++ CLR is a joke in the industry. I'd drop that right now and just learn "real" c++. Not microsofts little incantation of it.
Anyway, no I wouldn't say you need to know a whole lot of languages, but definitely more than one will help. Employers like to see that you are at least capable of learning new languages if need be.
Don't know about Windows CLR (never encountered it), but C++ (with perhaps some C and associated skills) is everything in today's finance -- hedge funds, high-frequency traders, banks, exchanges, everyone is hiring, everyone needs C++. Similarly, telecommunication, oil and gas, traffic control and tolling, various embedded systems (stuff inside an HP laser printer or inside a Lokheed airplane) are other examples of the types of jobs that are available to a C++ programmer. I don't know what Amazon and Google need C++ for, but they've been hiring, too.
Although you only need to know C++ other languages are always helpful. Employers would rather employ someone who can adapt and someone who they will not have to waste time/money training. Just my two cents.
