Serial Ports

Alright, I am very much in foreign territory with this one, so lets start with the make or break question. Is it possible to access the Serial Port on a Windows PC without having to deal with windows.h? As in, is there a way I can keep Serial Port data handling limited to a console application and not have to worry about it being windows specific?
