copying source code from a directory

Hi,

I took a programming class a few years ago (C++) and have since forgotten everything, even the most basic stuff. I just got assigned my first programming assignment in a very long time. It involves adding to a main program my professor has provided, accessible using a "cp ~----/---/* ." command. But when i type this into terminal, nothing happens. This is probably a very easy thing, but how do i view/edit that source code?
