templates notorious to debug?

I've heard from word of mouth that templates are notoriously difficult to debug and have begun to generally accept this. But is this official? And if so, where is it talked about in booked or any other credible academic references?
Plus is there any shred of knowledge you share with me over them? so far I have learnt that they are hard to debug and they are very hard to define in .cpp files (I failed to do this over a month ago).
