OR Operator

This may sound a bit absurd but how the heck do you get the OR operator character on a British layout keyboard. The symbol appears to be on the key next to the number 1 bellow escape and above tab. I believe its called tilde however ive tried using shift, alt, tab, ctrl, altgr and i cant get it to place that vertical bar that appears to be the OR operator.

Erm nevermind. Turns out although the symbol is on that key it only operates of the shift + backslash next to shift
