Image Insertion

I am making a checkers game...and i wanted to know if i can insert a background image of the checkers board instead of making it all by graphics...because i don't have any idea for the both of them....

if u can plz guide me through this i will be thankful...

tell me the syntax of how to insert an image..or any good tutorial that would be helpful ..thank you :)

You most certainly can, with SDL or SFML or Allegro or QT or pretty much anything that lets you put graphics on the screen =]

i have windows 7 ...and i am not getting the options that they are showing in the download procedure...:(
