Syllable Separation

Hi, im new at this forum.

I'm in college and i got this assignment to do, it's a program where you put a word and the program separates the syllables, the problem i got is because i live in venezuela obviosly the program has to read ASCII extended characters i.e.(á, é, ñ), so i don't know how to do that. What can you recomend me?
