Suggestions for an easy to use middleware...

I have an assignment that is intentionally vague: utilize a free middleware program and demonstrate how to invoke it. What I hand in will be my implementation of it.

I am looking for (free) middleware that is well documented that I can invoke using C or its derivatives (C++, C# are fine). Something that can be done on a local machine is preferred, but I have some web space where I can utilize a handful of languages, scripts, and interfaces if I need to.

My own searches have come up some things that I admit to be a bit overwhelming which is why some support through documentation is necessary.
