Making a counter

Hey everybody.

I'm making a program that makes it so that when you press a key, it adds a certain amount of points to a running total. I have the pressing a key part, but now I need a way of making it so that in case 'a' it adds +500 to the total amount. How do I do this easily?

if(keypressed == 'a')
  score += 500;

But seriously...

How are you getting key input? How you determine which key is pressed depends on the input method you're using.
I have this hobbyjobby code compiled from several internet sources and what me and my uncle made
