Need direction for beginner

Hi again all.

I know I've been posting a lot on here recently, I apologise about that - espiecially when some of my mistakes are real 'n00b15#' ones to make.

But now I'm after direction/help in a new way.

Basically I've been teaching myself C++, no tutor, no college/High School/University classes, no experienced or knowledgable friend, just me and a book. I've gone through "C++ for Dummies" (rubbish), nearly done "C++ a beginners guide". I also have "Tricks of the Windows Gaming Gurus, 2nd edition" but feel this may be out of my league until I get some much needed experience!

I can't do any classes or the like due to poor health, but want to be able to get to a reasonable level in coding abilities. My main goal (be it couple of years down the line) is to be able to work on games (sourceforge, Xbox L!VE and the like).

But in the meantime I need some experience to get me there. But where should I go?

Due to poor health I can't get an employed job in programming - just won't happen and I'd end up having to let people down. I was, however, thinking about remote volunteer work for a local company, do you'd think they'd take me?

Are there perhaps sites that provide 'projects' to help noobs (like me) to excerise their minds and "talents"?

I know that this isn't the normal kinda of question posted on here, but any replies would be brilliant and greatly appreciated.

Should you be wondering, I live in Devon, UK.

Many thanks.

There are many opportunities available in the Gamedev.net community. Potentially thousands of indie projects looking for some remote talent to help them out... granted most of the projects tank after a few months, but it will give you some experience, and most importantly, allow you to practice your skill set on a somewhat larger project. You can of course always look into open source projects, but your skill set is most likely not yet developed enough to contribute.

How far along are you in learning C++? Have you tasked yourself with any projects or started experimenting with a 2d API?

is to be able to work on games (sourceforge, Xbox L!VE and the like).

For XBOX live development you're going to need to learn C# and XNA.

Thanks for replying. I haven't as yet started tasking myself with projects... have no idea what kind of projects to start doing.

As for my depth of knowledge I know classes, overloading operators, pointer work (with classes too) IO basics (just going through chapter about file work) but absolutely no GUI/graphics/3D stuff... I was hoping the above mentioned 'guru's' book would handle that...

But will certainly start looking at GameDev.net when finished C++ for beginners. Actually it was that site that made me get hold of "Trick of Windows Gaming Gurus" in the first place... Just didn't wanna get involved in a project until I had some experience.
