Image analysis program

Im just starting to learn c++ (i did a little bit of python,java). So i set my goal to make an weld image analysis program and learn c++ in proccess of making it :). One that will take an image(link to the image of weld below - all input images will be more or less like this) and calculate/measure the depth of penetration on each side of materials /FROM THAT IMAGE/ and then spit out those values in mm/cm to txt(Later to excel). And i just dont know where to start can you point me to where to begin, what should i focus on. is OPENCV good solution for this ? any advice would be appreciated THX very much
