What is the symbol for does not equal?

I am making this forum post because I cannot figure out what the symbol for does not equal is.

Example of what I would like to know.

if (x (does not equal symbol) y)

can anyone tell me the symbol(s) that need to go in the parentheses?

well never mind everyone i figured it out on my own and i also realized that i didn't even need to have does not equal in my program at all.
