VST controller parameters

I was looking around some IPlug code to make a VST plugin. And my quest is to figure out how to get a good GUI going. (If I can do that the math part is easy) The thing is I keep running into the lack of understanding how the parameters that you can see inside your VST host are generated.
So there's the obvious button or slider in the host. But also the host generates a list of controls that are present and can be automated. Is this a byproduct of having gui components? Or are there rules to generate/format these handles?
