Becoming intermediate through real projects?

Dear fellow programmers,

I'm Memento and new to Cplusplus.com, I already feel at home.

I have a question regarding the progression from beginner to intermediate in c++. I just finished the book Jumping Into C++ - by Alex Allain. Currently I'm implementing different algorithms in c++ to get some practice with writing algorithms.

I am very interested in (ethical) hacking and computer security. Does someone know when I will be able to pick up a book on hacking, and start using what I learn from it in c++? I just want to get started with something and progress my c++ skills through real projects. I am also interested in games as a means of progressing my c++ skills but I won't pursue it for any other reason (e.g. for a job.)

So I hope to get some opinions on when a C++ programmer can venture into related subjects like ethical hacking and/or developing games. Finally, do you think developing games or ethical hacking is a better way of progressing C++ skills?

(I hope it all makes sense. My english is a little rusty, so forgive me for any mistakes in my writing.)

Sincerely,
Memento.
