problems installing ubuntu

So i am trying to install ubuntu on an external hard drive. i have tried a couple of methods, i turned a USB into a boot device and tried to install from there. when i powered off and on and booted from the boot device i saw a menu with the ubuntu logo, i t had options like "try before installing" and "install" and a few others i don't remember. i tried both options i mentioned. upon selecting the option my computer monitor went blank and i received a "no signal" message from my monitor. I tried just leaving it over night but it didn't seem to do anything. the video tutorials i've seen for installing ubuntu that doesn't happen. Any ideas?
