OpenGL is a great option. Why it isn't used over DirectX is beyond me. If you desing a game for Linux, it's usually easy to port to the other 100 alternate OS systems around. But Windows, having gone irregular, makes you go out of there way just for them. Not to add pretty much all your paying for is instability and DirectX which until about DirectX6, was the exact same thing as OpenGL. I, to this day, do not understand why people abide by an expensive, unstable, unsecure operating system not to mention selfish. They don't make more money off of it nor do they get more respect for making a game for Windows.

DirectX was borne out of a need to run games effectively in early versions of Windows as you did in DOS. What's the big deal? DOS allows direct access to the hardware, whereas Windows began to apply conventional OS practices, i.e. restricting access.

OpenGL started life at SGI, legendary for their grapgics kit. Running OpenGL on PCs back in those days was inconceivable.

They have different heritage, that's why there's two.

Have you heard of Farenheit? The mixture of OpenGL and DirectX. I wonder what happened to that...
