Text adventures are always a good start. Or if you're like me and you're not very good at writing, you can make other projects like calculators, game shows (I'll explain in further detail), ACII Art, etc... You could also team up with someone to create a text adventure, they do the writing, you do the programming... That's also something I did.
By gameshows, I mean make a game like Jeopardy, or something similar. It can be a bit complex, but it shouldn't that different from making a text adventure.
There are tons and tons of forums on this topic. I wish I had bookmarked them so I could link you some, but I'm sure they'll come right up if you Google it.
