How do I check, if a certain key is pressed?

I want to make a Linux-compatible program, that does something upon a key press. I know, that you can do this for Windows, but I couldn't find a way to do this on Linux.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: You can probably move this post to the UNIX/Linux section.

The advantage of this is that there are both Linux and Windows ports.
Is there a specific function you'd recommend? I really don't feel like going through the entire thing now.
